School is in session! An exciting time for freshman and upper-class men alike. One of the things that may not be a topic that is frequently thought of, is the underground infrastructure and building history of some of the most attended colleges. Understandably so, but in many cases there is a rich historical background to consider.
Throughout Houston, there are well acclaimed colleges and Universities. Founded in 1971, UHCL has an enrollment of more than 8,000 students. The institution began offering freshman and sophomore classes during the fall 2014 semester. The University of Houston–Clear Lake (UHCL) is a stand-alone university; it is not a branch campus of the University of Houston (UH). Although UHCL and UH are both component institutions of the University of Houston System, they are separate degree-granting universities.
The vast majority of classroom space is located in the Bayou Building, which is the largest building on campus. The bayou building, interestingly, along with the other structures and their underground infrastructures are tied into a sewer plant that once used an ‘open lagooning’ method of disposal. It was one of the first two treatment facilities in the United States. Known as The South Side Plant, built in 1918 and abandoned in 1948, it is now part of the University of Houston’s campus.
